✵ They claim to teach certain subject more profoundly, to a greater extent, sometimes more hours are allotted for such subjects, but in most cases the only difference is their name on the doorplate, in many aspects they resemble old good Soviet schools.

✵ By claiming to be different from other school they try to select the best pupils and in some cases the best teachers as well, which may be considered their advantage. If such an institution is fee-paying this advantage is levelled out because those pupils are selected whose parents can afford paying. And money doesn’t guarantee a good level of pupils and high standard of teaching.

Henry doesn’t like Mathematics because he thinks it is boring and yawned at the middle of the lesson.

Melinda likes Maths because she thinks it is great, but she doesn’t like History because she says it is really boring.

✵ Arts and Crafts Room. Here we have materials and instruments for painting, needlework, sewing, and suchlike. In glass cabinets there are lots of beautiful works made by our pupils.

✵ Assembly Hall. There’s a big stage with a huge curtain and rows and rows of chairs. It seats more than 350 people. All important meetings and other events take place there.

✵ Canteen. It’s a great hall with many tables. We have our lunch there. Pupils can choose from many dishes and drinks offered. There is also a buffet where we can buy snacks and sweets.

✵ Gymnasium. It’s as large as the Assembly Hall. It has very high ceilings so that we could do rope-climbing. There are athletic ladders along one wall, and various sports equipment along another wall for playing tennis, ping-pong, volleyball, basketball, football, and many other sport games.

✵ Laboratory. Here we can see and participate in conducting experiments demonstrating various natural phenomena and how laws of physics work, or bow different discoveries, like, for example, electricity or vacuum, were made.

✵ Computer Room. There are dozens of computers there. We learn how to operate them, how to create texts, tables, and pictures, and even try writing simple programs. Unfortunately, we are very seldom allowed to play computer games.

✵ Library. Here there are many hundreds of metres of book-shelves with books on every school subject. There are not only textbooks, but also specialized journals and newspapers. Our librarian helps us find the books we need.

✵ Workshop. Here we can see workbenches with grips for woodworking and metalworking. There are cases with saws, hammers, files, nails, and so on. There are a few lathes and milling machines for cutting, drilling, grinding, etc. It’s like a mini-factory.

Hi, Nick. In your letter you ask me what subjects I learn at school.

Well, there are many of them, about a dozen or so. Most of them are boring. We have to sit quietly and listen to teachers or other kids reading from a textbook or answering teacher’s questions. Besides, they are impractical. What is the use of learning geography if to buy a plane ticket is a luxury? Where shall I travel? I’ll be lucky if my parents take me to my granny’s village in summer. The same is with history. Nobody learns the lessons of history because even today, in the 21st century, wars are going on, there are hungry children, and a bunch of rich moneybags rules and exploits billions of people. So we can only look on at history repeating itself. As for mathematics, we can do any sums with calculators in our phones, so why rack our brains?

In my opinion, the only useful subject is English. It helps people to communicate. I hope that when I grow up you will marry me and take me to England, will you? Hope to hear from you soon.

Your Masha.

Once I was asked to conduct a lesson at first form. I had never viewed myself as a teacher and I am not sure that I have a way with children, but one day the first-form teacher got suddenly ill. Other teachers had their own classes, so my class teacher said, «Why don’t you try teaching young children?» And I did. I was worried and excited. My task was to revise the alphabet with children. They were also excited to see a strange serious girl come into class and start teaching them. Now I think I want to be a teacher when I grow up.

Dear Buzz,

In your edition of October 15 there was a letter about mobile phones at school. I totally agree with the author that mobile phones are a terrible nuisance in class. They distract both teachers and pupils and they get less knowledge and cannot digest information properly because of endless interruptions.

If you ask me, those kids and their parents who claim that phones are necessary to keep contact with each other are not sincere enough. There is plenty of time for communication at home, and not while children are at school. Our parents went to school without mobiles and managed somehow. In my opinion, most kids carry about their phones just to boast with them and show off whose model is cooler and more expensive. I think phones should be banned from school altogether.

Sincerely yours, Ted Brown.

b) © # The rules of conduct in British and Ukrainian schools are alike. As for calling the register we have about the same situation — some teachers call the list, others only ask who is absent today.

We don’t have prefects as such, but in Soviet and post-soviet period we had nearly the same system of Young Pioneers’ leaders. In some schools this system is being re-introduced under some other names of course. On the one hand it doesn’t seem to be bad, but on the other hand, some prefects have to be looked after and controlled themselves.

The same principles apply to punishments in our schools, though teachers are not advised even to make pupils stand outside, because if a pupil somehow hurts himself being outside at school-time it will be the teacher who will be responsible. So in the matter of disciplining there’s not much that a teacher can do.

I will try to include new or lonely people or at least be polite to them.

I will try not to be late and interrupt the lessons.

I will speak up against bullying or discipline violations.

✵ They do indeed. While going to school you come across all sorts of people.

✵ In many cases it does, though there are a few teachers who want kids to be obedient and do as they are told.

✵ Mostly it does, though some children may become even more confused, especially at the beginning.

✵ It tries to, though at schools kids often witness examples of other behaviors.

✵ Yes, school lessons may he very interesting and inspiring, though much depends on teachers’ personalities.

✵ In some cases it succeeds, but most kids tend to plan their time non-rationally.

✵ Our schools don’t do so. They may give general idea of existing jobs, but being prepared for one needs further training.

✵ As in the case with good behavior, schools try to do their best, but kids are very different, and some children are exposed to bad behavior and distorted moral values among their peers.

✵ Yes, they do, and it is up to pupils whether they use this knowledge or not.

School in My Life

It can he said that school is my second home. It’s another matter whether it is comfortable or not. Like there are families with different lifestyles and homes they live in, so it is with schools. I wouldn’t say it’s the place to he dreamed of, hut I have little choice in this matter.

School introduces me to various people, helps make my own decisions, teaches me how to be polite, introduces me to new science ideas, teaches about my country, its history, culture, and so on.

There are many good teachers at my school, but in my opinion, our English teacher is the best. She loves her work and teaches English well. She is very close to my ideal of a teacher who should know his/her subject excellently, have a way with children, understand them, be patient, and funny.

There are a few of my classmate who hate school for various reasons. Some of them have missed important material earlier and now simply can’t understand the subjects, others are bullied or teased because they are somehow different from the others, still others are simply bad or lazy or indifferent; they simply don’t care. I am not like that!

It would be nice to study at a modern school. All schools in the 20th century all over the world were designed to resemble either army or a factory or a prison or both. Hence the rules of reading the list, aligned rows of desks, all activities starting with the bell ringing, etc. Modern classroom should resemble a playground — we are kids after all. Pupils should be allowed to stand up and walk during the lessons. Of course, it is difficult to maintain discipline in a class of 40 pupils, so there should be 7 to 10 pupils in a group.

As for the school of the future, an idea of learning in comfortable conditions at home via internet, described in Daniel’s letter on page 71, appeals to me. If adults can work for large corporations from home, why can’t children do so? Besides, our greedy government bends over backwards to economize on everything. Why not economize on school buildings by selling them off and transferring the money abroad on private bank accounts now that there are internet technologies? This is the way of the future!

2. I would just lay and wait for someone to save me.

3. They can’t. Bravery is formed by education and upbringing.

4. I think there is no direct connection between self-discipline and bravery, but it might help.

5. He probably wanted to stay alive in the first place, and his autosuggestion helped a great deal as well.

6. She did, because she remembered them all and taught them self-discipline which would help them in life.

7. She thought of that, and for that reason she taught them to be patient and persistent.

8. She taught them self-discipline.

9. She was, because she could instill discipline in her pupils.

10. I do, because she could achieve what she wanted.

11. Her ex-pupils’ gratitude could serve as a medal for Miss Dove.

12. On the one hand, they have long holidays in summer, but on the other hand their job is hard, ungrateful, and low-paid.

13. In my opinion, a good teacher is the one whom pupils remember with gratitude.
