a) Я люблю читати.

I am fond of reading. I like nearly all genres, but best of all I like science fiction and historical novels. I don’t read much in English. Apart from the text-book I’ve read a few short stories and Winnie-the-Pooh by A. Miln. It’s difficult for me to read un-adapted English books. There are many Ukrainian and a few English and American writers on my reading.-list. I’ve read most of them, the most impressive being T. Shevchenko, I. Franko, L. Ukrainka, W Shakespeare, O Wild, Mark Twain, O’Henry to name but a few. I read Robinson Crusoe and The Mysterious Island several times. Nobody makes me read, I read on my own because it’s interesting. Sometimes I do, but it’s rare. Usually a dull book becomes interesting after a dozen pages or so. I always read a book to the end with maybe a few exceptions. Literature is my favourite subject, and I’d like to read all the time and read books «from cover to cover», but I have to prepare for other lessons as well. I like many authors, it’s difficult to separate one of them. In my favourite book characters I like their strength, audacity, cleverness, kindness, humor, and similar traits. From books we can learn how to live and how to behave in different situations.

I go to my school library once a week. I joined it when I went to the third form because I wanted to read other books apart from textbooks. To join the school library was natural because it is near to the place of my Study. At the library I choose the books either from the reading-list or those advised by my classmates. The librarian is also helpful. If I need a book on some topic, say on sea animals, but don’t know its title, the librarian always helps to choose one or two.

Lewis Carrol is the pen-name of Charles Dodgeson who wrote Alice in Wonderland. This man’s main occupation was teaching mathematics, though. He also wrote many works in logic. Nevertheless he liked and understood children. The main character of his stories is a little girl Alice. She tries to make deductions of what she sees applying what logic she possesses. Nearly all of her judgements are incorrect, but for the child they seem obvious and logical. The action usually takes place in a strange and unfamiliar world which the girl discovers for herself. Anyway, her adventures end well, she returns home safe and sound. I have reread this book several times because it is funny and amusing.

# As for me, I listen to music in my free time. Moreover, I often listen to it when I do something like washing the dishes, or cleaning my room, or going to the store. Some people listen to music even when taking a bath. I buy a CD or two a month, but mostly I either listen to it on the radio, or download it from the internet, or borrow discs from friends. Unfortunately I don’t go to concerts. For one thing, you have to find free time for it, besides I don’t like huge crowds of excited people, and ticket prices may be a problem, too. I am not much of an expert in the field of music, but we share our opinion on this or that song or a piece of music. Most of the time we just say if it’s cool or not, whether we like it, or if we recommend to listen to it.

Ever new electronic gadgets enter our lives and become indispensable. Nowadays we cannot imagine our lives without cell phones or credit cards. It will probably happen with the Kindle and similar gadgets. Indeed, they are light portable things with options of adjusting the letter size or the screen brightness, and with more unthinkable opportunities to come. Instead of bringing a dozen books to school it’s enough to take one Kindle. Besides, considering the paper book prices, it will be cheaper to unload a book from the internet. These are big pluses, but on the other hand we are used to holding a material book in our hand, to turning pages, looking at the book-cover, and suchlike. So, maybe paper books will stay with us for a while before becoming museum exhibits. Time will show.

Most teenagers will say they love pop and dance music. But tastes differ, because people are different, so they have their right to have their own tastes. Besides, most people prefer different kinds of music depending on their emotional state and the situation.

A.: Why do you like fishing?

B.: Because it’s exciting.

A.: You kidding? Can grilling in the sun in summer, or freezing to the bones in winter, or soaking to the stitch in autumn without as much as moving or whispering a single word for hours be exciting? Man, you don’t imagine what exciting is?

B.: Are you telling me you are the clever tough guy who knows what exciting is?

A.: Well, I reckon we’ve got carried away. Sorry mate. I guess fishing is OK.

B.: Well, maybe you’re right, it has its own drawbacks, but tastes differ, aren’t they?

a) I quite agree with the saying because we are different and can have different tastes, and what’s good for one person may be bad for the other, but if person enjoys a hobby or activity which doesn’t hurt or interfere with other people, he or she are free to practice it.

1. Yes, I do. Hercule Poirot [er’kjul pua’ro] is French private detective from a series of detective stories. And it seems he didn’t enjoy visiting England.

2. I’m sure I didn’t read the book, but I think I saw the film on TV long ago.

3. Yes, I guess there was a programme or two dedicated to him. He’s a plump Frenchman, or a Belgian, who is fond of eating. He has mustache, wears a bowler hat and carries a walking stick. His clothes are expensive. And he’s a bachelor.
